Copper beech loss in Kington

We were disappointed to learn of the recent felling of a fine copper beech in Kington, Herefordshire, not far from our main office.

This tree happened to be one that we had inspected several times over a number of years, and in which we had never found cause for concern. We were therefore surprised to learn of its summary felling for, apparently, reasons of safety. We find it very hard to believe that it could have become dangerous in the interval since our last inspection.

We strongly recommend that anyone concerned about the safety of a tree obtains the opinion of a professionally qualified tree consultant (an arboriculturist), not that of a tree surgeon. Whilst many of the latter can provide sensible advice, even the best tree surgeon’s expertise will be limited when compared with that of an arboriculturist. One is also much less likely to encounter a ‘rogue’ arboriculturist, as opposed to a rogue tree surgeon.

Finally, if it becomes clear that work to the tree truly is necessary, one is well-advised to choose a tree surgeon that is an Arboricultural Association Approved Contractor.
